Homogenization theory is a powerful method for modeling the microstructure of composite materials, including superconductors and optical fibers. This book is a complete introduction to the theory. It includes background material on partial differential equations and chapters devoted to the steady and non-steady heat equations, the wave equation, and the linearized system of elasticity.

An introduction to the homogenization of linear problems. The basic techniques are

    1. Formal asymptotic expansion. A powerful tool to get the homogenized problem and the associated cell problem, but not so easy to validate convergence and various error estimates.
    2. Oscillating test functions. This works in the variational framework, using subtle cancellation to handle the limit of the product of two weakly convergence sequences
    3. Two-scale convergence method.
    4. Viscosity solution and comparison method.
